About the Course

Conflict is a healthy part of relationships, families, teams, and the community. How do we make it an opportunity?

This experiential eight-hour course builds on participants’ existing wisdom to introduce language, concepts, and skills of healthy conflict resolution and restorative practices. Sessions are held either in-person or using the interactive capabilities of Zoom video conferencing, so expect to be energized and empowered to increase restorative practices in your work and life and to be prepared for Advoz’s intermediate courses. This course includes:

  1. Conflict, Harm and Restorative Practices - Introductory Frameworks
    1. Defining “Healthy Conflict” and Durable Frameworks
    2. Unconscious Stress Responses to Hurt and Harm
    3. Social-Relational Conflict Styles
  2. Culture and Inclusion Strategies
    1. Bias and Multipartiality in Conflict
    2. Mainstream & Margins in Conflict
  3. Communication and Restorative Listening Skill-Building
    1. Listening Awareness and Blocks to Listening
    2. Empathic Listening and Emotional Intelligence
    3. Listening to Understand What's Unspoken

Approximately 30 minutes of pre-class homework is expected as part of this course, including taking and reviewing results from a Social Relational Window Assessment.

Conflict, Communication & Culture is required for Advoz's subsequent trainings in Basic Mediation, Restorative Justice (Victim Offender) Conferencing, Circle Process and more. Find listings here: https://advoz.org/training

CLEs are available for PA-registered attorneys including 2 Ethics credits for working with diversity and trauma of clients and colleagues.

CEUs are also available for licensed social workers and marriage and family therapists. Select the Professional Registration and the CLE/CEU option.

Note, to qualify for the Volunteer Rate we ask that you: 1) have an interest, passion and basic skills for listening and working with people, 2) be available 3+ hours average/month over the next 1-2 years, 3) apply to become a facilitator/mediator at this link, and 4) live or have recently lived within commute-able distance of Advoz (South Central/Southeastern PA). If further away, then you could still be eligible but primarily only as a co-facilitator for online cases.
